Would being a Chemistry major qualify me for work in a forensic science lab?
YES! Our lab courses teaches our students to use analytical techiniques, a skill required for any forensic lab! Becoming familiar with all of our instruments via our courses and lab classes is highly recommended for a forensic science career path.

What is the difference between a BA and a BS degree in Chemistry?
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree requires fewer semester hours in chemistry than a Bachelor os science (BS) degree. A BA degree gives the option of taking non-calculus based physics to satisfy the physics requirement. BA majors may also, with the permission of the department, substitute a physics course (at the 200 level or above) or a course in molecular biology (at the 300-level or above) for one course in chemistry. For further details, go to the Courses link in the left navigation bar under Programs.

What is the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (B&MB) major?
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is an intensive, research-oriented major advised jointly by the Chemistry and Biology departments.  It offers excellent preparation for graduate study in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology and related fields.  Almost all majors conduct research during two or more summers, first at Sweet Briar and then at major research universities, before continuing to graduate school. B&MB is recommended only for highly motivated students with very strong high school science backgrounds.  It requires 74 credits -- more than twice as many as some majors -- and it is important that courses be taken in sequence .  If you are interested in this major, please talk with Professor Davies (Biology) or Professor Jill Granger (Chemistry) early in your first year.

Can I go to medical school with a Chemistry or B&MB degree?
YES! Most students choose to major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (B&MB) to satisfy the chemistry and biology courses needed for medical school. You can also choose to major in chemistry and minor in biology.

How do I go about getting involved in research over the summer?
Easy! Contact each of the faculty members within the department and ask them if they think they will have any openings for summer research. If so, ask what type of project they would expect to have you working on. Check with all of the professors and decide what type of research fits your interests the most.

How much money can I expect to earn over the summer for research?
This typically depends on whether you are funded through the Sweet Briar College Honors Summer Research Program (HSRP) or by the individual faculty member. The stipend is usually about $3,000 to $3,250 for an eight-week period.

Where do I live while doing summer research?
The dorms are open to research students during the eight-week research period at a cost of $25/week.

Can I study abroad my junior year if I major in Chemistry or B&MB?
YES! It is best for you to plan this during your first year, since some courses are offered alternate years. If you plan on taking science courses abroad, then you would need to clear it with the department prior to enrollment. It takes careful planning, but it is definitely possible!

Will there be life outside of Guion if I become a Chemistry or B&MB major?
OF COURSE! There are a lot of programs involving leadership opportunities, riding, athletics, and outdoors activities offered on campus that our majors take advantage of. SBC co-curricular life website has all the information about life on campus.

What kinds of jobs can I expect with a Chemistry or B&MB degree?
Most of our majors choose to continue onto higher education such as graduate school, medical school, veterinary school, or dental school. Others have also entered into industry to continue with research in biopharmaceutical corporations, fuel industries, forensic science labs, and even perfumeries. Visit our Recent Alumni website for more information on where are they now.
