Logan Fitzgerald
Class of 2009
Major(s) : Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Minor(s) : Mathematics
Email : fitzgerald09@sbc.edu
I live in Amherst, VA. I attended Sweet Briar College as a day student all four years while living at home. I graduated from SBC in May '09 with a B.S in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and a minor in Mathematics. I chose my major because science and math have always been my strong subjects and I've always envisioned myself working in a research or health laboratory. Currently, I still live at home (lots of plans for the near future, though!) and I have a laboratory position at a local pharmaceutical company, C.B. Fleet. I worked at Fleet as an intern the summer of my sophomore year and I loved it!!
While in my final semester at Sweet Briar I was job hunting and contacted Fleet. As luck would have it, a senior analytical scientist had just quit, and they opened an entry level position, which I applied for and got! Now I work as an Analytical Chemist in the Research and Development Lab. My duties include analyzing stability, in-process, and finished product samples; testing raw materials; developing and validating methods for products; acting as project leader as assigned (which includes lots of meetings); maintaining laboratory/work environment; and compling with GMP (Good Manufacturing
Practices) documentation (fancy way of saying I do paperwork and keep a lab notebook). I also calibrate all the balances and ph meters daily, assist other chemists as needed, maintain inventory/control the
HPLC columns and attend additional training/seminars when available.
Sweet Briar and the internship (that Sweet Briar helped me get in the first place) prepared me well for this type of work. My future plans include settling down, building a house on my family's land, and starting my own family. My life at this point is just where I feel it should be and I have SBC to thank for that.

Jana Pfoutz
Class of 2009
Major(s) : Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Minor(s) : Dance Performance
Email : pfoutz09@sbc.edu
My name is Jana Pfoutz. I am a senior at Sweet Briar College and plan to graduate in May of 2009 with a Degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (B.S.) and a minor in Dance Performance. I stay on the SBC campus during the week, and go home to Smith Mountain Lake in Franklin County, VA on the weekends where I volunteer as an EMT-B. After graduation, I hope to work in a laboratory to research and/or develop medicine pretty much anywhere I can get a job and continue volunteering as an EMT-B. Also, after graduation, I am getting married to start a family of my own.

I am from Spotsylvania, VA, a county just outside of Fredericksburg. I have always preferred science over the humanities and, since arriving at Sweet Briar, can proudly call myself a Guionite! I would like to pursue a career in massage therapy with the intention of eventually working with humans and animals alike. I am quite involved with the Riding Program and have been since my Freshman year. I have my own horse and had the privilege to bring him to Sweet Briar my Senior year!

I am a local student from Madison Heights, VA just minutes down the road; however, I lived on campus my first two years, in an apartment in Amherst my third year, and my final semester attending SBC, I am married, so I am living with my husband in Madison Heights. I became really interested in science in high school and then I took an EMT class and my interest in the medical field grew. I realized while being a member of the Amherst Life Saving Crew that I wasn't just interested in helping these people with their immediate problem, I wanted to know what was going on inside their bodies to cause the certain conditions, illnesses, etc - I wanted to know the science behind it. Naturally, when I arrived at Sweet Briar, I became a Biology major and then when I started taking Chemistry, I really enjoyed how both sciences seemed to go hand-in-hand. If I would have realized my love for Chemistry sooner, I'm pretty sure that I would have double majored. My future plans...Well, as I stated earlier, I became an EMT; however, I didn't feel that I wanted to go on to be a medical doctor, instead I wanted to focus on a field that was more specialized and one in which I was really comfortable in - that being dentistry. My mom has been in the dental field since I was little, and plus I have been working in a dental office since I was 16. Dentistry seems to connect all my interests: science, helping people, and I'm comfortable when I'm in a dentist office (which seems to be a rare feeling). I have applied to VCU School of Dentistry - let's all cross our fingers and hope the stars are aligned!! However, no matter what, I feel that Sweet Briar has truly prepared me for every obstacle and challenge that may come my way in the future. I have loved every minute at Swet Briar, and although I am a local student, when I go through the gates at Sweet Briar, I step into a totally different world that seems thousands of miles away from Amherst, VA (not cutting down Amherst, but it's true).
